A personal maid named Lucy Wickwright is always taking the blame for her mistress Miss Cant. Miss Cant is heir to the thrown of Castle Cant. One day when Lucy is taking her mistress to look at the telescope with Professor Lemonjello, Lemonjello thinks Lucy supports "the cause" ("The cause" is preventing the castle from getting chewing gum imported, because it is bad for the kingdom's health and it is addictive.) Lemonjello gives Lucy a message to send to a prisoner, Arden Gutz. When she goes in the Dungeon to deliver the message to Arden Gutz, he tells her that a man named Orloff, who imports the gum, plans to take over the throne when the king dies. Orloff will then throw Miss Cant into the Dungeon. Lucy feels she must stop Orloff. Arden gives her the key to Orloff's office to steal back Arden's paper with all the reasons why people should not buy gum, so that Arden can publish it for the commoners. When Lucy gets to Orloff's office she discovers that Orloff was the murderer of her parents and brother. She also hears Orloff talking about making sure they keep a woman locked in the Castle. Lucy gets really mad, thinking Orloff is going to lock up Miss Cant but she later finds out from an uncle that Lucy herself is a daughter of the king and therefore the older sister of Miss Cant. When Lucy goes back to the castle the king has died but never revealed to the court that Lucy is really the heir to the throne. Will Lucy be able to save her mistress (sister) and become the queen? Will Arden Gutz and his reinforcements defeat Orloff and his Loyalists and preserve the throne?

Opinion:

I really liked this book a lot. I found myself reading and reading and reading and not wanting to stop because the flow was so good and it was very exciting. Because there is a lot of dialogue in the book it reads faster than you think. I loved the ending because I think no one would expect it to turn out the way it did. There was lots of detail so I understood it very clearly. I thought how the author made the characters act was really neat because it seemed like each character had a different but interesting personality.
