LitPick Review
Diabetes is a disease affecting millions of people worldwide. Dwight Treadwell is one of them, and in his book Overcoming Diabetes and Thriving Through Faith and Prayer, he tells of his personal journey fighting diabetes.
Opinion:
In his book, Dwight's use of gaming metaphors such as “halftime,” “quarter,” and so on is one thing that felt different about the memoir from the others I have read. It structured the narrative and added a creative format to the story. Such metaphors stood for a part of his journey. For example, “halftime,” mentioned earlier, referred to a turning point for the writer: his leg had just been removed, and he was trying to figure out how to navigate the second half of his life. While the “second half” refers to his new life where he had to struggle to deal with the pain and thrive instead of just survive, this metaphor was actually his best because it is the part where he buckled up his life and persisted to victory.
Dwight's life is one that was filled with pain and frustration that comes from living with a physical condition. However, instead of being weighed down by this, he thrived through faith to overcome his struggles. His story, although told in an uplifting way, was based on reality. The story explored the writer's physical and spiritual growth. Physically, Dwight's adaptation to life after getting his leg amputated was a real fight. He had to move from being depressed and frustrated to coping with the pain of learning how to improve his condition while using a prosthetic leg. Did he end up succeeding? Of course, and an example can be seen when he walked for the first time without any assistance. It was not easy, but he made it, and it was accounted to him as a victory. Spiritually, rather than being stuck with his physical condition, he turned his bitterness into a motivation by praying fervently and using his illness as an opportunity to draw closer to God.
Many people today are faced with physical disabilities and challenges; they feel bad and view it as a punishment, but after reading Dwight's life story, I also hope that readers with similar conditions can feel encouraged and know that they can still accomplish great things. Overcoming Diabetes and Thriving Through Faith and Prayer is not just a memoir; it is a book in which readers can find hope and strength in prayer.
Even though this book is mainly for Christians, readers who are searching for books on motivation and spiritual encouragement can find this book to be inspiring. The book would be best for people living with chronic illnesses, Christian readers, church ministries that are searching for books on faith, and people who love to read inspirational books. Dwight Treadwell's memoir is a story that reminds us that with faith, any situation we are facing can be changed.
