LitPick Review
The King of Slippery Falls is a book about a boy named Lewis Hinton, who feels his life is a mystery due to the fact that his actual mother gave him away in a basket to Mr. Hinton. Once 16, Mrs. Hinton gave Lewis a letter that was left in the basket that explained who his mother was and why he had been left with the Hintons. Lewis friends try to help him find his real mother, while he had bigger fish to fry, literally! He claims to have seen a humongous fish in the river and sets out day after day to try to catch it even while being mocked by many people. After discovering a cavern behind the waterfall, Lewis meets with a tragic incident and it will take everybody he knows and loves to help him recover even when the chances are slim.
Opinion:
This is an inspirational book about doing something with your life and perseverance, while being extremely funny at the same time. Hite makes Lewis be extremely persist in trying to catch the imaginary fish, which in a way has since motivated me not to give up on other tasks. Also, he makes it funny along the way. For instance, he named a character Maple Baderhoovenlisterah. It always made me chuckle when she was in a part of the book. In a sense, this book was a page-turner. In the beginning, I was not too interested and found myself inattentive to the book. But by the middle and end, I could not put it down! Now about the vocabulary in this book. It is said to be for grades 7 and up, but I definitely disagree. I found myself looking in the dictionary most of the time and not always knowing what some phrases meant. Anyway, The King of Slippery Falls is a great book and I would unquestionably recommend it to anybody.
