Ruth Mendenberg, a survivor of the Buchenwald concentration camp, has risked her life to help smuggle a group of refugees into Palestine. Now she wants to forget the past and forge a new life. But violence is escalating all around her as Arabs and Jews struggle over the rigths each groups has to live in Palestine.

Opinion:

In light of the continuing Arab-Israeli conflicts in the Middle East, this book presents a look at the early Jewish settlers in the region and the problems they faced.   I felt that the author did a very good job showing the issues and the organization of the eary Jewish settlers in Palestine after they arrived from the horrors of the Holocaust.  The story added to my knowledge of the founding of Israel and the difficulties its citizens continue to face today because many of its neighboring countries are still unwilling to accept them in peace.
