LitPick Review
Effie Starr Zook is a rich girl from New York City, and she has lots of questions. When her parents tell her that she’s going to be spending her summer vacation with her aunt and uncle down on Zook Farms, she can’t imagine a more boring way to spend her vacation -- until she gets there, that is. The whole town knows who Effie is: great-granddaughter of the amazing Gus Zook, inventor of the barf bag! But there’s something no one is telling her, something about ‘bad blood’ and Zook family secrets.
Effie won’t stop asking questions until she gets some answers, even if she has to pull them out one by one. This story is filled with strange neighbors, lots of cherries, and even some precepts from the Beards for America, a group run by the Yoders, the strangest neighbors of them all. Effie Starr Zook has one more question, and she won’t stop until it’s answered.
Opinion:
Though this book wasn’t my favorite, Martha Freeman still did a good job with it. I loved the characters, and my favorite was probably Effie herself, because you don’t come across too many characters as loveable and full of questions as her. I also enjoyed the humorous parts of the book as well as the writing style of Martha Freeman. My reason for disliking it was that although it was fast-paced, it wasn’t overly exciting. Despite this fact, I do think it was a nice, short book to pass the time.
