Orion Howe is left behind while his father and brother go to war to drum. He is desperate to join the Union army so he can be besides his father and brother. The question is, when he gets into battle will he be brave enough.

Opinion:

I found The Drummer Boy of Vicksburg to be a younger version of The Red Badge of Courage.  This story has a lot of history about the Battle of Vicksburg is woven into the plot.   I felt that the author aslo did a very good job presenting the character of Orion and the different issues he comes up against throughout the book.  I recommend this book to preteens looking for a good fiction about the Civil War.
