Opinion:
Author Sherry Ellis gives readers an alternate reality in Bubba and Squirt’s Shield of Athena. Ellis’ descriptive language allows the reader to meet beings from Greek mythology and thrusts the reader face-to-face with mythical beasts with magical powers leaving scenes to be played out in the mind’s eye over and over. Bubba and Squirt’s Shield of Athena is part of a series but was read as a standalone book. Ellis does a fantastic job of introducing the backstory; however, having a few additional details about Bubba and Squirt at the beginning of the book would have been ideal. To heighten the reader’s Greek experience, Ellis was thoughtful in providing interesting facts, a glossary, recipes, and maps at the back of the book. Reluctant readers will enjoy the heart-pounding, fast-paced action as will lovers of Greek mythology and folklore. Read Bubba and Squirt’s Shield of Athena. It is legendary!
