When Kevin’s grandmother passes away, he and his family find a treasure map with coordinates to a “bounty of gold” in New Hampshire. At first, they cannot believe it, but after finding out that the area of the coordinates is still forest and mountains, they set out to find the treasure. Kevin, his brother Johnny, his cousin Amy, and his Aunt Vera decide they will wait until the weather warms up a bit and then hike up to the coordinates to find the treasure. Early in the spring, Kevin realizes one day that his Aunt Vera is missing. He figures that Aunt Vera had left early to find the treasure, despite not having many wilderness skills. Johnny, Kevin, and Amy decide that they must find their Aunt Vera and continue searching for the treasure with her. But when they finally catch up with Aunt Vera, Kevin realizes that something strange is going on. Aunt Vera cannot see Kevin or Johnny, in fact no one other than cousin Amy can. Will Kevin be able to figure out what's going on, and will he and his family find the long lost treasure?

Opinion:

I really enjoyed reading this book! I think the author did a great job of showing the backstory between Kevin and his grandma, as well as the rest of the family. This helped explain the dynamic between Kevin and his brother and cousin, and why their Aunt Vera would have set out early for their trip. I also think that the story behind the treasure map was very interesting, and I like how there was a connection to Kevin’s grandfather. It made it believable that the treasure could still be buried, while also leaving suspense on whether someone has already found it or stolen it. I also think the author did a great job of keeping an element of suspense throughout the book. I really liked the twist in the middle of the story about Kevin and Johnny being dead the entire time. The pacing of the story felt neither too quick or boring, and was perfect for a mystery book. Readers who enjoy mysteries and treasure hunting would love this book!
