Florenda and her mom live in a small town in Louisiana where Florenda's mom works as a nurse. On the last day of school, everyone is looking forward to summer break when the principal makes an exciting announcement. Starting at the beginning of the new school year, Florenda's school will offer a band class. Florenda is super excited and knows right away that she wants to play the clarinet. As soon as Florenda's mom gets home, she tells her the exciting news and her mom agrees to take her to the instrument store in the next few days. The next day, Florenda goes to her neighbors', The Lyles, house while her mom is at work. The Lyles are an elderly couple who are like family to Florenda and her mom. Florenda is still very excited about the band class and tells them all about it. Later, her mom can finally take her to the instrument store. When they get there, they learn that a clarinet costs over $900, and Florenda's mom tells her they cannot afford it for now. Florenda is determined to get the clarinet, even if that means that she will need to work the rest of the summer to earn the money. But will she be able to get a clarinet to play in time for the start of school?

Opinion:

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. Within the first few pages of the book, I liked how the author explained Florenda's background in terms of being in foster care and how her mom was a nurse and worked long hours. This helped me relate to her more starting from the beginning of the story and understand what kind of backstory her character had. In addition, I liked how the author clearly explained what Florenda's relationships were with the other characters like The Lyles and her friend Lilly.  I think these two things will make it easier for younger readers who are starting to read chapter books for the first time not to get confused despite the length of the story being longer than what they are used to reading. I also liked how the book showed that while things may not work out exactly how you want, there are other ways to get to where you want. I think this is an important lesson for young readers. Overall, I think this book is perfect for readers of younger ages who are just starting to read chapter books.
