Emily Strange has always been able to get out of going to school. Most of the time, she's homeschooling herself. It all seems to work pretty well. As Emily plans out her school curriculum Emily's mother decides she wants to teach a class-History. The History of the Strange Family, to be exact. Emily's first assignment is Great-Aunts Through the Ages. Every 100 years or so a Strange family aunt has a cool talent. Great-Aunt Millie died in 1761 but is somehow still sticking around and Great-Aunt Lily had special healing powers. That's where Emily Strange discovers something that is indeed strange. Great-Aunt Lily (the healer) died of white fever at age 13. Emily decides to use her T.O.M., or Time- Out-Machine, to travel back to Lily's time and find out what really happened. While visiting Lily in 1790 she runs into the ancestor of her real-life present-day enemy. Will Emily be able to learn the truth about Great- Aunt Lily and save her from her untimely death?

Opinion:

Emily the Strange is an enjoyable, quick read. With amusing pictures decorating the pages and funny dialogue this book is very entertaining. The book is written as if it was the 13-year-old, black cat loving, and nocturnal Emily Strange writing. It is very easy for younger kids to understand. Emily includes short quizzes from her homeschooling life, dialogue with her friends, family members, and foes, as well as her comical daily syllabus. Emily the Strange: Dark Times is a great book for kids!
