Emotion bleeds from the pages of Steve O'Brien's "Elijah's Coin: A Lesson for Life." The protagonist Tom is a renegade teen with selfish ambitions and a severed childhood. During one of his acts of self preservation, he encounters a mysterious man who gives him his two cents (literally and figuratively). Tom is confused but intrigued and tries to find this mystery man. With only words of wisdom and the coin the title refers to, Tom sets off on a journey that will change his life.

Opinion:

This book is short yet powerful. Important lessons for life are given that many readers may be familiar with. They are popular Judeo-Christian morals that most learn in kindergarden (treat others kindly, don't be selfish, giving is better than receiving, etc). Churches are mentioned briefly, yet there is no overt religious theme. What I like about this book is that there are Christian undertones, but the author does not shove Christianity down people's throats. Hopefully, readers will begin to think about others instead of themselves and then have the inspiration to seek God as they see Christians living out the morals in this book. Also included with the book are two of "Elijah's coins" for the reader.
