A young boy named Vernon needs a lot of help if he wants to pass this school year. Vernon's friends make fun of and pull pranks on the single parent next door and her retarded son Ronald. They also call her crazy lady. The crazy lady, whose name is Maxine, introduces Vernon to a tutor who helps him raise his grades. The tutor tells him to help Maxine with some errands. While doing the errands Vernon gets close with Ronald and starts to take a liking to him. Ronald's teacher tells Ronald, Maxine, and Vernon that Ronald should do the Special Olympics. He raises money and gets him new clothes and shoes for the Special Olympics. But not everything is smooth sailing.

Opinion:

I thought that this book was a great and touching book. It made me see the world in a whole different way because I could relate to it so much and it gave me good ideas for life. It also was sad and made me respect retarded or disabled kids more. This book wasn't very appropiate for young readers because of language and wrong acts for young children to learn about. But this book also told of the consequences of drinking alcohol. It also made you think that retarded or disabled people sometimes don't need a lot of help and they have a great potential inside of them. I did not like the ending though because it was sad. But nonetheless it was still a very good book with a lot of meaning to it. If the author had not used cuss words or you leave them out I think it would have been okay to read to a class of mature elementary kids.
