After her mother disappears at age 8, Jerry stops talking. Before beginning her freshman year in high school some years later, she moves in with her great-aunt Costanza in New Mexico. One day, Jerry discovers a trunk downstairs in the basement of her aunt's house. In the trunk she find precious heirlooms belonging to her ancestors. From each of these pieces, Jerry discovers a story from the past. By piecing the stories together, Jerry understands the significance of strange customs her aunt performs and the history of her past and her voice comes out again, loud and clear.
