During most of the story we dont know how he died, just that she can clear his name and that his old girlfriend Jenny had something to do with his death. Months before Charlie died, he turned into a total jerk, cutting off his and Vera's friendship. Vera works as a pizza delivery girl. She drinks, but doesnt smoke, and around the middle of the book starts to date a 23 year old (shes 17). Her father trys to protect her, but tends to fail.
