Pirates and Smugglers
Kingfisher Knowledge: Pirates & Smugglers
Pirates and Smugglers
Moira Butterfield
This is a swashbuckling introduction to the highwaymen--and women--of the seas from the Cilician pirates who terrorized the Mediterranean more than two thousand years ago to today's well-organized and ruthless buccaneers who target supertankers on the China Sea. The book examines the terror tactics of pirates throughout the ages and uncovers the secretive schemes of modern-day smugglers.

Profile Picture

Pirates are often viewed as drunk, wearing a long coat, an eye patch, and a cutlass. There is much more history behind them than that. Pirates have been in existence since around 2500 B.C. and are still around today. They have earned several names such as Vikings, barbarians, privateers, conquistadores, and buccaneers. No matter what they are called, they all share the trait of being violent for a profit. In the past, their living conditions were not very good due to food shortages on their ships and the torture they would receive if caught by authorities.
