Graphic designer Gracie Temple learns that she has inherited her uncle Benjamin's house in the Mennonite town of Harmony, Kansas. When Gracie goes up to Harmony to get the house ready for sale, she finds a letter from her late uncle containing a secret. It is now her responsibility to deal with the problem. Someone tries to keep Gracie from discovering the truth, and Gracie has to decide what is really important to her. Sam, her neighbor, and her try and solve the mystery before someone gets hurt.
A van accident two years prior to the beginning of the story leaves Jolene Yolder without her hearing. She is living with her aunt and uncle to learn total communication when she gets a call from the Amish community that she grew up in and where her family and friends live. Two deaf children have moved into the community, and the community wants Jolene to come and teach them total communication since she was a teacher before the accident. When she moves back, she tries to teach the whole community the art of signing, so that it is easier for her to communicate with everyone.
