"Whores on the Hill" is ostensibly about a group of friends at an all-girls high school in Milwaukee in the '80s. Readers follow the perspective of the new girl, Thisbe, as she is initiated into the clique calling themselves the "whores on the hill," and who delight in being "so Lisa Bonet, so she-wolf, so commando- going, get-your-freak-on, powerhouse sex bombs" - doing what they want, when they want, and telling the rest of the world to, well, you know. However it's intended to be, though, the book instead comes across as someone's nostalgic remembrance of their formative years in the '80s, but gone wrong - leaving any really joyful moments for descriptions of all the gaudy, gross details.

Opinion:

There's a good story in here somewhere, with real emotions, real life problems, and real friends. But it's clouded over with a fog of dirty language, dirty street corners and back seats, and dirty deeds. If you or a young teen you know are looking for a modern, moving, coming- of-age novel, pick up "Looking For Alaska" by John Green. But unless you're prepared to sift through a lot of garish scenes for a glimpse at the heart of the novel, steer clear of "Whores On The Hill."
