The witty book, Sorta Like a Rock Star begins with the main character Amber. She is a young girl who struggles with issues that unfortunately many girls face today. Amber grows up with an absent father and an alcoholic mother. To make matters worse she is forced to sleep in a school bus out of desperation of being homeless. Amber is ambitious and faces her struggles head on! Her companion is her "Catholic" dog, Bobby Big Boy, or "Triple B" for short. He is always there to listen to Amber's gossip and somehow give her advice to deal with her teenage drama. One day, Amber's world comes crashing down when she faces the worst disaster of her life. Will she overcome her loss or no longer be the princess she thought she was?

Opinion:

Considering that the author is a male, Matthew Quick did a fantastic job writing in first person in the view point of a lively teenage girl. The story is awkward and funny. The reason why I liked this book was because of the religious Christian aspect. Whenever Amber had troubles she went to the bible and asked questions. Her questions really made me think, one was in chapter 39, "Why didn't God turn the other cheek when Adam and Eve ate the apple? Why did He have to punish all of mankind for eating a damn apple?" From reading this book you will gain a lot. The book has powerful messages for young girls to think about. Some of the messages that Matthew Quick emphases are: the importance of family, and the sense of belonging.
