LitPick Review
The book Slog's Dad by David Almond is a sad story about a young boy named Slog and how he watches his dad fall because of smoking. The story is told by Slog's friend, Davie, perspective. Slog loves his dad and is hurt by all the events that happen because his dad decides to smoke his life away. Davie tries to help Slog heal and make him realize that his dad is not in a nice place. Slog still has hope that his dad is going to stop smoking and be the old dad he used to be. Until, the day come that Slog's dad dies. Slog's dads last words were, "I'm going to be back next spring." Then, next spring comes and in Slog's heart his dad comes back and tells him he's happy in Heaven. Davie is there listening and believing that Slog's dad is there at the moment talking to both of them of how things are much better in Heaven. That's the moment when Slog finally let go of his father and accepts his gone and won't come back.
Opinion:
I really enjoyed the book, Slog's Dad, because its realistic. Smoking hurts everyone around not just the person who smokes. Slog is very hurt and doesn't want to believe reality, but he had to let go soon before it affected him in the future. No matter what Davie would tell him, Slog knew in his heart that someday his father would come back as his old self and he did. I recommend the book to anyone. It's a short story made for all ages. The book really got me thinking that there's families right now in this world struggling with some kind of drug that is affecting their overall health. Also, Slog show's a lot of hope, which I really liked because it helped him deal with the pain. In the end, he got to see his dad again and he let go which is very important.
