The book Secrets, Lies and Algebra is a realistic fiction
book. The book's main character is Tess. She is an eighth
grade who loves math because it is the only subject she
can trust. It never changes and there is only one answer,
it is a subject with stability. However, Tess learns that
algebra is ever changing and is a topic with many tricky
variables. Throughout the story, Tess faces with many
challenges like deciding if she should tell on a boy she
likes that is doing something really bad. Also, Tess
learns that friendships have variables too when she
discovers her true friend betrays her. Tess' mother acts
like a variable when she senses a possible murder case.
Tess' life in eighth grade is ever changing along with
math.

Opinion:

<p>The author portrays Tess as a real character
because she vividly describes their feelings, actions and
physical appearances. I like Tess because she is a
hardworking, smart student that knows what is good for
her. Also, she takes care of her family and tries to keep
them safe especially her mother. This book is told in the
first person, from Tess' point of view which I like
because it fit the plot of the book. The author achieved
her purpose of describing how math is used in the everyday
world and how everything changes. The writing was
effective and very age appropriate. I found the book very
interesting. I recommend it to others because it is a
great book to learn about the struggles of eighth grade. I
give it two thumbs up.
