Deza Malone is living in Gary, Indiana, during the Great Depression. As the smartest student in her class, Deza frequently visits the library with her best friend, Clarice Johnson. When Deza's father, Mr. Malone, gets injured during a fishing trip, he loses his job and the Malones don't have enough money to keep paying rent. So Mr. Malone sets out for Flint, Michigan (his hometown), to look for a new job and a house. When they don't hear from him in a long time, Deza, her brother Jimmy, and Mrs. Malone set out to look for him. Deza has to deal with the sudden changes in her life, such being separated from her father and best friend.

Opinion:

Being a fan of historical fiction, I think that this book is exceptional because it is a well-written work set during the Great Depression. Deza Malone was one of my favorite characters in the book Bud, Not Buddy. The story is told from Deza's point of view, and she is a really funny, spunky girl. Her character is deeply developed over the course of the story. The various moods throughout the story really moved me. The plot is skillfully composed with a few secrets. The ending surprised me. It is very sad and happy at the same time.
