LitPick Review
This story is about a ten-year old boy whose parents want to have a pet. He doesn't have an interest in pets, so when his parents buy him a goldfish, but it dies because Mason overfeeds it. His father soon surprises him with a hamster. Mason and his best friend, Brody, play with it and it runs away. Mason's parents get a cat from the animal shelter and they soon find out that Brody is allergic to cats. When they are taking back the cat, Brody goes head over heels when he meets up with a three- legged dog. Mason doesn't care much about the dog until the lady showing them around the shelter tells them that, if not adopted, the dog will be put down later in the month. Mason feels sorry for the dog and agrees that the dog would be okay as a pet. At first, Mason didn't care about Dog and it is Brody that plays with Dog. When Brody goes on vacation with his parents, Mason gets time alone with Dog. Mason soon finds himself best friends with Dog. When Brody gets back from vacation, he still considers Dog his. Mason is now challenged with standing up for his dog.
Opinion:
The story had a very interesting topic. In my opinion, Brody had a lot of control over Mason. The pets Mason gets seem to be Brody's more than Mason's. There wasn't more than a chapter about the first three pets. I would like to have read more about each pet. I would recommend this book for 8-12 year olds.
