Many have heard of the great English author Jane Austen, but few really know who she was and what inspired her to write her much-loved novels. In Jane Austen, a Life Revealed, Catherine Reef explores Austens personal life and exposes sides of the writer that are not apparent from reading her books. Jane Austen lived a quiet life, and depended almost completely on her male relatives after it become apparent that she would not marry. She was involved in writing novels, plays, and short stories starting at a young age, and continued to write up until the time of her death. She received modest praise for her novels, especially Pride and Prejudice, during her lifetime. After her death, however, her work inspired movies and other novels, and attracted many fans. Through its usage of quotes, pictures, and historical documents, this well-rounded biography gives readers a glimpse of what Jane Austen was really like.

Opinion: 

This book was rich in facts and information on Jane Austen, but at the same time was fresh, creative, and engaging. The numerous illustrations allow readers to fully grasp the information. The information about the time period Jane Austen lived in, the Georgian Period, provided a solid understanding of the historical context. Also, detailed summaries of Jane Austenss most well-known books were provided so any reader will little background of Austen's novels would be able to follow along. Jane Austen, a Life Revealed is certainly appealing to any audience with a love for Jane Austen's work, and was an excellent book.
