Anthony Logan is a big time reporter for a very important newspaper. His style is "old school", writing articles that aren't twisted to his advantage. One day he makes the biggest mistake of his life. Voicing an opinion in court, a ruthless killer is released. Weeks later the only eye witness drops dead. Soon Logan finds himself fired, and highly recognizable for messing up the trial. When no one else will hire him he resigns himself to teaching college journalism and reporting for a newspaper he personally dislikes - The Graphic Times. Logan's editor receives a call from the killer and immediately sends Logan and his funky partner, Jettie, off to Two Hat, Arizona. The killer claims to have had a vision, and has a story that he will only tell to Logan. While there, Logan and Jettie soon realize there are more secrets in that old forgotten town then they would like to think, and most are better left to die in the heat.

Opinion:

Joe Costanzo wrote Graphic Times in a style that constantly kept the story bouncing back to the past. Flashbacks can play to the reader's advantage by giving them background to go off of, or the reader's disadvantage by jumping into an old memory that isn't distinctly a past or present memory. In my case all the different flashbacks made it hard for me to paint my own picture of the story in my head. However I liked how in the end he could give you the impression of what he intended to happen, without coming out and saying it because of some of the flashbacks he'd sewn into the book earlier.

I found myself wanting to put down the book more often than not. It had a few highlights in it but only for short streaks. If I had not been reviewing it, there's a definite chance that I wouldn't have finished. (Don Hansen)
