LitPick Review
This is a fantasy novel about Alysha Catherine Gale, part of a powerful family that can do pretty much anything they want with charms they can cast. The Gale Aunties run the family, sometimes a bit too much, as they try to keep the magic in the family. Alysha is tired of the Aunties telling her what to do in her life, so she decides to take over her Grans old junk shop after receiving a letter inviting her to do so. She realizes soon after moving to Calgary that itll be harder than she thought to find out what happened to Gran even with help from others. Alysha might just have to call in her family to fight the magical battle thats coming to Calgary.
Opinion:
I found this book a little hard to get into at the beginning, but as it moved through the story it became more suspenseful and interesting. The plot was creative and Tanya Huff mixed life and magic well. She also put detail into important places, like describing magical items or the junk shop itself. This helped me picture it all better. There was a lot of dialogue in this story, which established the personalities of the characters well and showed their reactions to events, making them more believable. At first, the book was confusing, because there werent any obvious explanations about the magic, the family, or how these things worked together. As the book went on I understood more, but there were still parts that puzzled me. The story did have lots of action, especially near the end, which helped to give it a fast-paced mood. I would recommend it to those who really enjoy fantasy and magic in books, and like action as well.
