John Rodgers lives in a town that thrives on the lumber industry. One day John is trying to catch a Mustard White (a type of butterfly) when he literally stumbles upon another butterfly. When he takes this one home to identify it he finds it's not in his books. His discovery of this butterfly could put an end to logging in the company forest where John found it and put the town out of business forever. John must take a side in this book, the environmentalists or the developers. Who will he be loyal to, his friends and family or his own beliefs?

Opinion:

California Blue is a very well-written and thought-provoking middle school fiction with an environmental theme.  I enkoyed this book very much and found that the story and character development made for an interesting read which placed you at the centere of an environmental dilemma similar to other environmental issues of today.
