LitPick Review
In the book Brutal, by Michael Harmon, Poe Holly is forced to go live with her Dad, whom she hasn't met in all her sixteen years. Poe claims her mother doesn't care about her when her mother goes on a trip to South America to perform free medical services. When Poe goes to live with her father, she meets Velveeta, a boy living next door with his Aunt Vicky. Poe is forced to go to a small public school, Benders High School, with only 600 people total. There she meets Theo, the mayor's son who's anything but normal. When Velveeta is brutally beaten by the football star Colby Morris, Poe knows she has to do something to fix it, and enlists the help of Theo, her Dad, and Velveeta.
Opinion:
In my opinion, I thought Brutal was an over-all good book. I would also say that Brutal contained way too much cussing and sexual content. It contains words that are not appropriate for middle school students. The dialogue was also a bit confusing, with Theo constantly talking in metaphors. But the plot was very distinct and the conversations were very interesting. On a scale of one to ten, I would give it eight. I would subtract the two points being the unneeded content I discussed.
