Polly, Jo, and Ama were good friends throughout elementary school but things began to change in 7th grade. Ama was hard at work with her grades and befriended another excellent student, Grace. Jo started wearing outfits that made her look "cool" and began hanging out with the popular girls. Polly, well, Polly didn't change. She continued to be the same, unique girl. The summer before the girls enter high school, they find themselves at a crossroads. Polly becomes obsessed with modeling, but she loses part of herself in her desperate attempt to look like Kate Moss. Ama is sent on a wilderness trip far away from home, where she has no friends and must take big risks to earn the A she wants. Jo gets a job on the beach, near her summer house, but must understand the drama and heartbreak of summer love. Together, the girls find themselves and each other during a summer they will never forget.

Opinion:

I absolutely loved Ann Brashares' Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series and her adult book The Summer of Me and You. Her writing is captivating and enchanting to read. 3 Willows is a more appropriate for middle school readers before they read the more "young adult" Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, but a great read all the same. It portrays great emotion between all three characters and brings readers on a wild ride. Jo, Polly, and Ama's stories are all fascinating tales of adventure and growth. An excellent read for preteens, this book captures the heart of young girls finding their own way through friendship and love.
