The Shifter has always been known in legend as an immortal being who guards the kings of Samorna and has the ability to change into mist or animals. Some people doubt the existence of the Shifter, but she is real. Prince Rokan comes to the Mistwood to find the Shifter and gain her protection, which is traditionally given to the kings of Samorna. Isabel allows Rokan to take her back to the city. Rokan's sister, Clarisse, distrusts Isabel, which Isabel mostly ignores. When a boy named Kaer tries to assassinate Rokan, claiming that he, Kaer, is the rightful heir to the throne, memories begin to return to the Shifter from the last time she was out of the Mistwood. Is Isabel really who everyone thinks she is, or is she just a mortal girl with some of the Shifter's powers?

Opinion:

I'm not exactly sure how to describe Mistwood. It's got mystery, fantasy, intrigue, and the Shifter. Until the Shifter started getting memories back, it was hard to understand why she couldn't shift at the palace. Characters shift and change like the mist, leaving the reader with uncertainty about who is who. This is a good book for people who like stories that are...intense.
