The Witch's Daughter tells a complicated tale that travels through the centuries from present day to 17th century. Born in the 1600s Elizabeth has already lived for almost 400 hundred years when she meets Tegan, a young girl living in present day England. Elizabeth tells Tegan about the many adventures and journeys she has taken over the centuries against a backdrop of actual historic events. Orphaned as a young girl in 17th century England after her father, brother and sister die of the plague and her mother is arrested and hanged for witchcraft, Elizabeth seeks help from warlock Gideon. Gideon takes Elizabeth under his wing and apprentices her in the art of witchcraft. Elizabeth becomes a witch but in return must stay with Gideon forever. Instead she decides to flee, setting Gideon on a life long witch-hunt.
Opinion:
After you read the summary above or the summary on the back of the book, you may have an idea about what this book is going to be like. However, to be honest, this book surprised me because it is more than that. Even though I tried my best to accurately summarize it, the story was complex and seemingly inexplicable- it was nearly impossible for me to capture it truly by a short summary. That seems to be the case with the best of books. The only complaint of mine is that the beginning of the book was a little bit dry and hard to get into. If you actually happen to read it, I URGE you to please keep on going because you will be rewarded for it. I continued to become drawn into the book the farther I read into it. I did actually learn a few historical facts as well, so that definitely is also a plus! I would highly recommend this book to others. I would do so because it was highly moving to me, and I think it might also be to others. If you decide to read it, I hope you enjoy it! :)
