LitPick Review
Conspiracy 365: July by Gabrielle Lord is the fast paced, exciting story of Cal Ormond, who is searching for clues that will help him unravel a family secret. All he knows is that the secret is of utmost importance- so important that the people who killed his dad are now after him. He has a deadline for his search, however; whatever secret his family has kept no longer applies on the December 31st. And, of course, he has been threatened with only 184 more days to live. The story follows Cal from where the previous book left off, with him tangled in a fishing net, and continues with other narrow escapes and tight situations. Along the way, he will need his friends and all of the luck he can get to survive.
Opinion:
Conspiracy 365: July by Gabrielle Lord was a very fast paced read, keeping me as the reader constantly on my toes and wondering what would happen next. The variety of characters the author used made the book a lot more fun; the loyal friend, Boges, the possible backstabber Winter, and an assortment of bad guys kept the story moving. Cal himself was likeable and smart. The plot was creative with all of the twists and turns, and I look forward to seeing how the series ends and what the Ormond Conspiracy actually is. Despite the interesting characters, creative plot and excellent suspense that was written into the story, however, I found myself annoyed by its lack of believability. All throughout the story, Cal is in tight, dangerous situations, and there is always someone that rescues him or a way out, like when the fishing net that he was stuck in was pulled up right away. When Cal is rescued in a page, the story moves too quickly and there is little meat or description in the telling of Cal's story. More description and little details supplementing the important actions and dialogue would make the book a lot more interesting. All in all, I enjoyed some parts of the book, and would recommend it to kids and tweens looking for a quick, exciting read where the action never stops.
