This story is told by the author and how he became a sleepaway camp counselor for severely handicapped children. At first, he thought he had been hired to be a camp counselor for your typical children sent to summer camp. He quickly discovers he has become involved in something quite different.

Opinion:

The Acorn People is a book that helps you appreciate individuals with special needs.  The author describes his transformation from at first being reluctant to help the special needs children at camp to becoming bonded with them and caring for them in a way he could never have imagined.  This is a wonderful book.  The honesty and sincerity of the author about his feelings, along with the very interesting camp stories he relates, makes this book a very worthwhile read.
