Maniac Magee's family is killed when a train crashes. He then runs away to a town where there is segregation. He deals with hardships and you really get the feeling of the horribleness of segregation.

Opinion:

The book Maniac Magee addresses the problem of racial segregation in a very unique and interesting story.  The character is unforgetable and I really enjoyed the way the story moves through the town as he runs from one place to another and into the lives of different people.  This book is important on many levels for preteens and teens, especially since it raises questions about discrimination and prejudices.
