After accidentally killing one of the hated Manchu soldiers, Otter (14) flees Kwangtung for the "Golden Mountain" (USA); he finds his adoptive father Squeaky and Uncle Foxfire in the Sierra Nevada, where thousands of "Guests" are laboriously working as slaves.

Opinion:

I found this book to provide insight into Asian culture. There was excellent character development which helped keep me interested, especially as Otter faces new challeneges after moving the the United States.
