Max and her friends, who she considers family, are living isolated in mountains near by California. They are up there for a big reason. They are mutants from a lab-testing area called "school". The school wants to get them back in their hands for more experiments. Max and her family look normal, besides their huge wings that they fly with. Also, some of her family members have special abilities, like reading minds. One day up in the mountains, the school's worker mutants, who are called erasers, and are half wolf and man, take Angel, the youngest of the family, away. Max loves Angel, and tries to get her back. He runs into difficulty along the way. The biggest surprise to Max is when she gets captured by erasers and sees Jeb. Jeb took the family away from the school. He also taught them self-defense. However, Max and her friends have not seen him in two years and assumed he was dead. Max realizes she was betrayed. When Angel is saved, the family escapes along. Angel tells everyone about an institute where they can learn about their past. The family doesn't know about their pasts, so they try to find the institute and learn about their family. But there are many obstacles in the way, like voices in Max's head, and the erasers, who are always gaining numbers and strength. Will Max find out this new and important information? Or will erasers take her and her family back to the school?
