Kelsey grew up in a house of fences and locks. Her mother has locked herself inside her home hiding from the outside world for 17 years. Her mother was kidnapped when she was a teenager but managed to escape her captor pregnant with Kelsey. She is terrified that she is going to be taken again, so she has locked herself in her house and has not allowed Kelsey to do much other than go to school and come back home.
