As long as there have been donkeys, there has been the secondary name for those humble beasts of burden...ass. Whether it be in the Bible, the Canterbury Tales, Shakespeare (most notably A Midsummer Night's Dream), or any other old english text, you will find this word in common, unoffensive use.
