Ty Cutter, named after his overbearing father's favorite baseball player Ty Cobb, hates baseball. He wants nothing more than to quit his town's Pee Wee baseball team. His father, "The Professor," however, has a different idea. Ty is terrible at the game but his father (also the team's manager) makes him a starter and team captain for every game. This causes resentment among him and his teammates. Ty has to persevere to prove to his father, his teammates, and himself that he isn't worthless.

He hates being touched and can't stand the colors yellow or brown, but he wants to find out who murdered his neighbor's dog. She prides herself on being different by her beliefs, the way she dresses, and her self-proclaimed punk rock lifestyle. In an instant she is whisked off to LA, on the last day of school before summer break, to play a character in a sit-com about an Orthodox Jewish family. In LA she is tempted by a lavish lifestyle. She struggles to keep her real friends and stay kosher.
