The book started with Denn Doyle betting his last 16,000 dollars and losing. Denn is a 17 year old boy with a fake ID so he can play no-limit gambling and now he's broke. Denn works his way up from nothing and meets Artie Kingston the man that set him up to lose all his money. Artie is having a grand opening of his new casino and Denn wants to win his money back. Denn tries to win it all back in a winner take-all Texas holdem tournament but he can't make it.

Doug and Becca MacKenzie, two teenage orphans, are forced to live with their uncle after their parents mysteriously disappear. Their uncle, Fitzroy MacKenzie, is the sea captain of a research ship named Expedient. Doug and Becca over hear Fitzroy talk to an unusual passenger, and decide to do some snooping about. As they learn, Expedient is not a research ship at all. It is a World War II Q ship. As a Q ship, the Expedient is disguised as a defenseless cargo ship, but once an enemy ship comes within firing range, cleverly hidden guns rise above the deck and open fire.

Snakehead is about Alex Rider, a fourteen year old spy, being sent undercover into a Chinese gang, Snakehead. His mission is to discover how Snakehead is illegally transporting Afghanistan refugees into Australia. Being forced to accept this assignment, Alex is not given any weapons or support, but he is determined to survive. Of course, he gets caught in a couple of tight places and is forced to think on his feet. In true Alex Rider style, he manages to come out of dangerous situations spectacularly.
