LitPick is a Baltimore-based edtech website that promotes reading and writing among students from fourth grade through college. We are seeking a versatile New Media and Managing Editor Intern to join our team to help tell the story of this unique online reading and writing program to preteens and teens from all over the world.

The New Media and Managing Editor Intern will work collaboratively with our Managing Editor, Site Administrator, and Webmaster to create a variety of content for LitPick’s online and media platforms, assist in reviewing and editing student reviews before publication, and work directly with authors and publishers on promotional campaigns for their titles. The internship provides experience in communicating with students, librarians, media specialist, and teachers while helping shape the online presence of our rapidly growing website in the edtech space. It also provides the opportunity to deeply engage with authors and publishers, providing potentially invaluable contacts in the publishing industry which hopefully will lead to employment in this field after graduation. Applicants should have a strong, self-motivated interest in new media publishing, social media platforms & practices, working with students, and an interest in preteen and teen literature.

You will NOT be asked to report to our office in Baltimore – this internship can be completed online and is available to anyone living in the United States. However, if accepted, you will be asked to start immediately.

Principal Responsibilities
• Edit student reviews and provide feedback to students on their writing;
• Produce content for our online digital media platforms, for promotional and contextual purposes;
• Opportunity for self-initiated projects on a monthly basis to promote the titles of authors and publishers to our online community as determined by candidate's skills and interests
• (potential project areas include editorial, web development, marketing contests & advertising campaigns);
• Boost Facebook posts and promote LitPick using Google adwords;
• Assist with monthly newsletter creation using ConstantContact;
• Work with LitPick student reviewers to produce testimonial and promotional videos;
• Track and report social media and advertising metrics.

Qualifications / Requirements
• Junior or senior in college or college graduate;
• A desire to pursue a career in publishing and/or online marketing;
• Strong writing and grammar skills, especially writing for voice;
• Skill in producing video for social media using YouTube;
• Versed in the social dynamics of online communities such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter;
• Active interest in emerging digital technologies, online communities, and social media platforms;
• Active interest in preteen and teen book publishing industry;
• Passion for reading; background in young adult literature, creative writing, marketing, or similar field helpful;
• Obsessive attention to detail and strong work ethic;
• Experience working effectively in partnership with people and comfortable with taking initiative;
• Good grasp of Adobe Photoshop, HTML, CSS, Javascript, Drupal, or other web programming languages a bonus.

Intern will receive valuable real-world and hands-on editing and online marketing experience and will work in direct contact with the staff of publishing companies such as Random House, Simon & Schuster, Scholastic, Candlewick, Harlequin, and many others;
Learn how to use a website content management system, an online newsletter publisher, and gain an understanding of how to boost Facebook posts and how to use Google adwords for online promotions;
Inclusion on our About Us website page with your headshot and bio, along with the title of “New Media and Editorial Assistant”;
Referrals / Letters of Recommendation will be given upon successful completion of internship.

Schedule
Approximately 5 hours per week, at least one year commitment
You will report directly to the LitPick Managing Editor

Compensation
This is an unpaid internship, but you will have the exceptional opportunity to learn online marketing and obtain experience editing reviews and other content for a professional website to build your portfolio. We will also help you establish contacts in the publishing industry and assist you as much as we can in obtaining job interviews with the various publicists and publishers where we have a relationship.
