Born on September 13, 1876, in Camden, Ohio, Sherwood Anderson left his family and life as a factory manager to pursue writing. His 1919 work Winesburg, Ohio featured deep psychological exploration and characters who had become “grotesques,” succumbing to despair. Later books included Poor White, Horses and Men and Dark Laughter. An influential writer, Anderson died on March 8, 1941, in Panama.
