Born on June 12, 1819, in Devon, England, Charles Kingsley became a writer and priest of the Anglican church who took on social reforms, as seen in novels Yeast and Alton Locke. Known for what has been described as "Muscular Christianity" and for his opposition to Roman Catholicism, he later served Queen Victoria. A poet and children's author who loved nature, Kingsley died in Eversley, England, on January 23, 1875.
