SIX MINUTES WITH KAREN KINCY:
Today Karen Kincy joins LitPick for Six Minutes with an Author! Karen is the author of several books including Storms of Lazarus, Shadows of Asphodel which Karen describes as dieselpunk romance, and Deadly Delicious (written as K.L. Kincy), a book about cake-eating zombies.
How did you get started writing?
I remember writing a story called "Candy Land" in first grade, with illustrations of a living candy cane with eyes. I didn't think it was creepy. (It was.) When I was thirteen, I tried writing a novel, and I started working toward publication when I was eighteen. When I was a sophomore in college, I sold my debut novel, and my schedule got a lot busier.
Who influenced you?
I loved the Animorphs books to death when they came out. I totally wanted alien powers to shapeshift into any animal. Even earlier, when I was a kid, I was addicted to Roald Dahl's delightfully weird books. I'm also a fan of Karen Cushman and Nancy Farmer.
Do you have a favorite book/subject/character/setting?
I'm sure everybody would say this, but I'd love to go to Hogwarts. I've taken the Sorting Hat quiz before, and it says I'm a Hufflepuff, so I would probably spend all my time in the greenhouses taking care of the plants.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to be an author?
Don't worry about what other people think. Write the books you want to read, listen to the readers who really get it, and never forget why you started writing your story.
Where is your favorite place to write?
The beach! In the summertime, I'll bring my notebook with my favorite pen and write by the water. It's frosty and freezing outside right now, though, so I've been going to a cafe and writing while drinking a lot of hot spiced cider.
What else would you like to tell us?
There might be a sequel to Deadly Delicious in the not-too-distant future! Disclaimer: I'm working on way too many books, so it might take awhile, but I've been scheming.
Karen, thank you for spending six minutes with LitPick! We’re looking forward to all of your new books!
