SIX MINUTES WITH S.K. HOLDER:

Today LitPick welcomes S.K. Holder for our Six Minutes with an Author interview! Born in the United Kingdom in Kent, Ms. Holder is an online business owner, a web content writer, computer programmer and web developer with a passion for writing young-adult, science-fiction, fantasy and paranormal books. Her books include Pools and Book One in The Other Worlds Series, The Quest of Narrigh.

How did you get started writing?

I started out writing short stories and poetry.

Growing up, I loved to read. I believed the stories and got swept away with the characters and their adventures. For me, it was a form of escapism. One day, I decided that I wanted to write and share stories that took the reader to another realm or another place in time.

I also have a lot of vivid dreams which have helped shaped scenes and characters for my books!

Who influenced you?

There are too many authors to name!  I can’t say whether they have influenced me or not, but some of the authors who have helped motivate me are J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Stephen King, Anne Rice, J.K. Rowling and George R.R. Martin.

I’m also influenced by sci-fi fantasy films e.g. Star Wars, Back to the Future and the Marvel comics universe.

Do you have a favorite book/subject/character/setting?

Without a doubt, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I enjoy fantasy fiction, and I love the idea of going through a door and entering a magical world. It really captured my imagination with its blend of magical creatures and characters.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to be an author?

Keep a notepad for your story ideas. It is easier to write about something you can visualize in your mind. Draw from your own life experiences. Observe people and settings.

Read different genres to gain an understanding of the various writing styles utilized by authors.  It may take a while for you to find your own style. To begin with, I suggest writing short stories in the first person.

Where is your favorite place to write?

Anywhere quiet. I usually write in my study or my local library.

What else would you like to tell us?

I wrote the ghost fiction book, Running, under the pen name, S. Bryce.

I’m currently working on the second book in The Other Worlds series called The Plague of Pyridian. I hope to release it in the spring.

Thank you for joining LitPick for six minutes, Ms. Holder! It was a pleasure getting to know you. We are looking forward to the release of The Plague of Pyridian!
