LitPick Review
Still struggling after the death of her mother, Vanessa Day is also trying to continue her late mom’s research: cryptids (cryptids are creatures or plants whose existence has been suggested by legend or local lore but not proven by scientific study). And a family trip to Scotland is going to give Vanessa an opportunity to study the famous Loch Ness Monster. But unfortunately it isn't only Vanessa. Her two brothers and father are going on the trip. Lee McDonald, her father’s new girlfriend (whom Vanessa hates), is also coming along. Armed with her mother’s cryptid files, Vanessa dives into the mysteries of Loch Ness…literally.
Opinion:
I thought that The Loch Ness Monster was a great, fast-paced book. In fact, reading this book made me interested in reading the other two books by the same author (The Chupacabra and The Pacific Giants). There was a lot about Vanessa’s conflicted feelings about her mom’s death and her father’s new girlfriend, Lee. This does make the story more girl-oriented, though boys could read it, too. I would personally recommend this book for girls 12 and up. One of the things I especially liked about The Loch Ness Monster was that each chapter provided interesting facts about Loch Ness and the legend of Nessie (the Loch monster).
