LitPick Review
Thirteen-year-old Lizzie Kennedy is the main character of Chasing Secrets. Growing up in San Francisco is difficult in the 1900s. It becomes increasingly difficult when rumors of the plague are beginning to spread. Lizzie’s father, who is a doctor, denies that the plague has reached San Francisco. But if it hasn’t, then why is China Town under quarantine? Why has the Kennedy’s cook mysteriously disappeared? And why is the cook’s son, a boy who knows more about Lizzie than she does about herself, causing her to question everything? As a dramatic mystery takes place on the streets of San Francisco, something even deadlier brews beneath.
Opinion:
Chasing Secrets is a well written book that captures the reader’s attention from beginning to end. Lizzie Kennedy, who is the main character, is a determined young girl who never gives up. Although not entirely historically accurate, this book is full of suspense and surprises around every corner. The author does a beautiful job of wrapping everything up in the end, and exercises the imagination by leaving the reader dreaming about what might happen next. Chasing Secrets is a book every bookshelf should hold! 10-13 year old girls would best enjoy this adventure.
