LitPick Review
In The Actual and Truthful Adventures of Becky Thatcher, the main character, Becky, is determined to have her own adventures. Accompanied with a bag of marbles her brother Jon, who unfortunately died, gave to her, Becky joins a school bet to steal from the Widow Douglas, the rumored town witch. She becomes fast friends with a girl named Amy Lawrence. Becky and Amy unite and work together to try to steal from Widow Douglas. That’s when the real adventure begins. After visiting the cemetery late one night to get some ‘lucky’ dirt to ward off any witches, Becky has an unfortunate encounter with the Pritchard brothers, who are wanted thieves and possible murderers. She catches them robbing a grave and is horribly threatened so that she won’t tell. When the Widow Douglas gets blamed for the robbery, Becky makes up her mind to try and apprehend the robbers. Will she be able to do it?
Opinion:
This book is intriguing and attention-gripping. With surprises around every corner, the author does a wonderful job of making it seem you’re right there next to Becky and Amy every step of the way. Becky Thatcher, the main character, is extremely clever, and always on the lookout for an adventure. Her best friend, Amy Lawrence, is more ladylike, but just as adventurous. The author, Jessica Lawson, does an impeccable job of making all the characters in the book seem real. It is a cliffhanger, but that leaves room for imagination. Geared towards girls of ages 10-12, this book will definitely end up on your list of favorites, and will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end.
