The Book Review Process (selecting a book to review)
Once LitPick receives a student’s application, it is evaluated and if accepted as a reviewer, he or she is emailed a username and password allowing them to login to LitPick and select a new book to review from our list of available books. Students must directly submit their book requests online by logging in to LitPick.
Step 1
After receiving the student’s book request, print books are sent to the student by mail, or in the case of an eBook, by email. Students usually receive the print book within 1 - 2 weeks after submitting their request. EBooks are usually received within 24 - 48 hours.
Step 2(the review process)
Students are asked to read and submit their review within 4 - 6 weeks after receiving the book. Once the student's review is written, the student logs into LitPick and submits their review online. Reviews should follow a general format that includes a brief summary of the book and the reviewer's opinion. You can look at currently posted book reviews on LitPick for examples of our student book review format. When reviewers log in to LitPick, they also receive instructions on how a review should be written.
Step3
The student's review is then forwarded to their sponsor for evaluation prior to being accepted and posted online at LitPick. When a student is not sponsored by a specific educator, the review is evaluated by a LitPick staff member who has a background in education.
Step 4
The adult sponsor evaluating the student’s review either accepts the review for posting on LitPick (occasionally making minor corrections to the review) or sends a message back to the student with specific recommendations on how he or she should edit their review. Once the review is edited by the student, it is resubmitted for reevaluation and acceptance.
Step5
After the review has been accepted and posted on LitPick, the student can keep the book and then choose another book to review. While enrolled as a Litpick student reviewer, students can review an unlimited number of books.
Many schools, libraries, and homeschool groups have incorporated LitPick into their curriculum and programs. LitPick has also been used to start local book clubs sponsored by parents.
Groups of students can review the same young adult title on LitPick as an eBook. We have hundreds of eBooks on our list that are available for review. Limited quanties of print review books make it difficult for us to furnish multiple copies to large groups, but educators and parents have used the LitPick program for their book clubs by allowing each student to choose a different print book from our list to read and review. Once a week or a month at club meetings, a different student then presents their book and book review to the group for discussion. This way, other students can decide if they would like to read the book too.
COMMENTS FROM STUDENT BOOK REVIEWERS
I love everything about LitPick! The variety of genres is awesome; if you can't find something on LitPick to read, you didn't want to read at all. KK – Indiana
LitPick has been a phenomenal experience for me. For months I enjoyed reading the reviews that my peers had written about new and upcoming books that I couldn't wait to check out at the library. When I found that I had an opportunity to review books of my own, I was thrilled. Becoming a reviewer for LitPick has enhanced and broadened the types of literature I read. I am so glad to be part of such a great community in which people from around the world enjoy the wonders of reading. MW - Massachusetts : )
I love LitPick. Not only do I have an opportunity to benefit from the free books I receive, but I also get to improve my reading skills. I think that LitPick encourages young adults to read because they have a chance to see what other young people think about books. I feel it is an excellent program and I am honored to be a student reviewer. KL – California
COMMENTS FROM EDUCATORS AND PARENTS
I want to thank you for giving these girls the opportunity to review for you. We are located in a very rural part of Ohio and often these students don't get these types of opportunities. I know that they both have gained self-confidence in their reading, their writing, and themselves throughout the course of the two years I have known them--much of that is due to your program. Though they only reviewed a few books for you, it has made the world of difference. I hope other teens are affected in this way by reviewing for LitPick. SS – Ohio
I love all that you do to promote reading with kids, teens, and adults!! KW – Virginia
