Emily is extremely excited when her Papa, a well-known maker of carriages, begins an order for President Teddy Roosevelt himself. Unfortunately, all her mother wants to do is make her into a lady, which Emily certainly does not want. The book delves into the racism present in her community and how automobiles may be threatening her family's way of life. URNA was created after the downfall of the American economy, and aims to prevent another downfall by controlling the population size. The law states that an abortion must be issued to any woman in poverty or underage that becomes pregnant. Vivica is the daughter of a Governor, so all her life she has been taught that the law is always right.
