Seanna has had a dark red birthmark on her chin her whole life. As much as she hates it, she’s learned that people judge her based on the mark on her face. But behind that birthmark lies an unbelievable amount of power. Her birthmark gives her pyrokinetic abilities that Seanna has no idea how to control. And on top of that, she has outgrown the orphanage that's been her only home. Forced to leave, she can only imagine what comes next from the rumors she heard while growing up. Will Seanna learn how to control her powers once and for all?
If I could only use one word to describe this book, it would be “WOW.” From the description of the book, I was very eager to read it, as it sounded like a story I’d enjoy. Needless to say, I was not disappointed.
Where can I even begin? Let’s start with the plot. I was a little bit worried that it would be a bit generic and typical for a YA novel. You know, the whole “girl is an outcast and gets abilities” trope that is so frequently overused and not done right in young adult literature. But S.D. Hintz didn’t go the generic route, and I couldn’t be more grateful. He created a story that was unique in that I wasn’t really sure if the main character was one of the good guys. I always admire a book that makes me question the main character’s motives, and that’s exactly what Vigilance & Vengeance made me do. I also really enjoyed the author’s writing style – it wasn’t too childish, but also not needlessly bloody.
The characters were well-written and displayed depth. I loved how each of them were unique in their own ways, and not a single character was completely good or completely bad. The author showed both sides of almost every character – the good and the bad – and it was something I loved. I can always appreciate when an author goes the extra mile to make even the bad guys sound rational at times. It helps the reader to really understand the characters.
Vigilance & Vengeance is an intriguing read filled with suspense, action, a bit of horror, and characters with depth. I wish I could say more about this book, but I’m afraid I’d spoil it! And so I shall leave you with this: it is a stunning read that any young adult genre lover would enjoy. If you choose to read it, you won’t be disappointed.
